TWENTY-FOUR

“Goodbye, guests,” Dalton said sadly to nobody in particular.

The guests of the coronation departed at sunrise. Titan had been the last to leave, mysteriously walking around with a stupid grin on his face. Dalton had tried to get out of him what he had been up to since they last spoke, but Titan only assured him not to worry about it and that he was sure the Gods would bring them all together again soon.

“Let us hope it is not for another funeral,” Dalton had muttered.

Titan laughed at the ill-natured joke, then embraced his friend with a grand hug. Oh, how he loved having equally insensitive friends!

Standing on the precipice of the balcony of the half-rebuilt South Wing, Dalton tried to ignore how he had royally fucked up the day before. He had done what he had to do, finally being honest with Charmaine regarding the unbreakable vow. Yet, it had completely and utterly backfired on him. He could not say he did not deserve that reaction, for he was sure that if someone he cared about—for lack of a better term—told him he made a vow ensuring if something happened to them that he would die . . .

Well, it was no wonder she was so pissed off.

A sick, twisted part of him smirked at the notion that she did care about him, not that it was a surprise to him. Rather, it irritated him.

He could not have her, yet he wanted her so badly his hands shook when he got too close to her. He did not know what to do about it other than continue to ignore all the signs pointing to bringing them together, and continue to do the right thing by her and his country.

Duty was a royal pain in the—

“Your Majesty?” A voice sounded behind him.

Dalton lazily turned his head to see Greyson standing behind him. His red garb made him stick out like a sore thumb, for it was almost as fiery as Elena’s gorgeous auburn hair. Dalton snickered at the thought of the two of them walking around today, while he wore that— two peas in a pod. Elena probably despised it.

Oh, how fun it was to watch her squirm with this assignment.

“Ah, Greyson!” Dalton chided, turning around to greet the young knight that did not irritate him in the slightest like Randolph did. “What may I do for you?”

“I just wanted to report about your—”

“My wife?” Dalton said, alarm raising in his voice. “Is she all right?”

“Yes, she’s fine, your Majesty.”

Dalton raised a gray eyebrow in question. “Then why have you come to speak of her?”

“I find she is . . . not in need of me.”

“Interesting take on the situation.” Dalton was trying to hold in a budding laugh.

A King should be professional, decisive, and strong. Dalton, however, in this moment, was none of these things. He was rather shocked by the admittance, though he was overcome with pride for his friend for no longer requiring a watchdog.

“I did not mean to overstep, your Majesty.
